The impact of socioeconomic background on the student experience

How can you attract, retain and support disadvantaged students? Find out in our new report, ‘A different world: The impact of socioeconomic background on the student experience.’

Created in collaboration with Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Leeds, the report lays out key concerns for disadvantaged students and applicants – as well as what you can do to improve their experience.

We’ve developed 33 student-led recommendations across 6 themes to help you take action. Best of all, they’re aligned to the OfS Equality of Opportunity Risk Register, helping you align with Access and Participation Plans.

Why we've done the research

Compared to the most advantaged students, disadvantaged students and applicants are...

10%

less likely to complete their degree

27%

less likely to expect to feel welcome at university

48%

less likely to be able to ask friends or family for financial support
