Episode 2 – the transition into university life

15 October 2020

Accommodation matters in the transition to university for new students

The transition to university is a major change for every new student. It’s an experience never to be forgotten, and is up there with moving house, changing jobs or starting a new relationship as one of life’s major transitions.

This is an area which Unite has researched extensively since 2017. Last year, we launched our Leapskills programme, with Department for Education endorsement, which helps to prepare young people for living away from home, many for the first time.

The Covid-19 pandemic has presented a new and evolving situation for students at the start of this academic year. We discuss this year’s transition and touch on the outlook for 2021/22 in the latest episode of our Accommodation Matters podcast.

This month our host Darren Ellis, Unite Student’s Higher Education Engagement Director, is joined by Clare Marchant, Chief Executive at UCAS, James Greenwood, Student Experience Manager at University of the Arts London, Wayne Templeman, Head of 6th Form at St Bonaventure’s School in Newham, London, and Jo Blair, Unite’s Area Manager for Glasgow and Aberdeen currently working with our UK-wide Covid response team.

Unite Students launched its Accommodation Matters podcast in September for anyone working in or associated with student accommodation. The first episode focused on student safety at the start of a new academic year and was well received across the sector and beyond.

Each month, Darren hosts a roundtable chat with university student accommodation leaders, national policy experts and subject specialists. Future episodes will focus on topical issues; explore student accommodation and the student living experience, as well as reflect on what’s happening and what might be coming over the horizon.
