Accommodation Matters S02E03: Race and Inclusion in Higher Education
27 May 2021
The events of the past year have brought questions of race, inclusion and equality into sharp focus across all walks of life, including in Higher Education. The latest episode of our Accommodation Matters podcast explores how the sector has responded to the murder of George Floyd and last year’s Black Lives Matter protests.
Our guests – all of whom have played a part in moving forward their organisation’s work on equality, diversity and inclusion – delve into topics including what work had already been done in the sector prior to 2020, how much last year’s events accelerated an existing appetite for change within the sector, and how universities and student accommodation can be more inclusive spaces where staff and students of all races can flourish.
As ever, Accommodation Matters is hosted by Darren Ellis, Higher Education Engagement Director at Unite Students, and our guests for this episode are:
- Shakira Martin, Head of Student Experience at Rose Bruford College
- Mhairi Taylor, Head of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at University of Glasgow
- Alex Mormoris, Inclusion Manager at London Metropolitan University
- Sam Kingsley, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Manager at Unite Students
Read Mhairi’s blog, about how the University of Glasgow is striving to be an anti-racist university, here.
