How parents can support the transition to university life

12 September 2025

The first few days at university are a significant milestone – not just for your loved one, but for you as a parent or guardian too.

While the media often portrays university arrivals as a whirlwind of parties and socialising, the reality is often much more practical: figuring out where the laundry facilities are, learning flatmates’ names, and discovering the nearest supermarket.

Here’s how we support new students during this crucial settling-in period, and some helpful tips on how you can help prepare them for a successful start.

We recommend checking what’s already provided in their accommodation to avoid unnecessary duplicates, and to arrive with essentials – they can always add as they go!

They should also look to get registered with a local GP as soon as possible, we include details of local GP surgeries in dedicated quick start guides – unique to each property.

We also recommend taking out contents insurance so that their belongings are protected. If they’re living with Unite Students, insurance is covered at no extra cost by Endsleigh.

Digital support at their fingertips

Our dedicated Student app puts support and community right in their pocket. This digital hub connects them to everything they need:

• Chat with neighbours and build connections
• Discover events happening in their building
• Receive important updates directly
• Manage their account and rent payments
• Get help if they’re locked out
• Report maintenance issues quickly
• Access exclusive discounts and deals
• Connect to wellbeing support services

The app serves as both a practical tool and a community builder, helping new students navigate both the physical space and social aspects of university accommodation.

Wellbeing support when it matters most

We understand that university life brings new challenges, and sometimes students need additional support. That’s why we’ve established comprehensive wellbeing services:

Our 24/7 student wellbeing helpline, delivered in partnership with Health Assured, provides free, confidential support throughout their university journey. Whether they’re struggling to settle in or facing challenges with mental or physical health, trained advisors are always available. Support can even be provided in over 240 languages through Language Line Solutions.

We also recognise that financial concerns can impact all aspects of student life. Through our partnership with Blackbullion, residents receive free access to resources designed to improve financial wellness, learn money management skills, and explore additional funding opportunities.

On-site support and community building

Our on-site teams are at the heart of our support system. These friendly, well-trained professionals are there to assist with:

• Adjusting instalment plans if circumstances change
• Providing quiet spaces and wellbeing rooms
• Supporting communal activities
• Implementing accessibility features and reasonable adjustments

We actively encourage participation in social events, resident wellbeing programmes, and common room meetups. These activities help new students find their community and build meaningful connections – often the foundation of a successful university experience.

Preparing for a positive transition

As your youngster prepares for university, remember that feeling nervous is completely normal – for both of you. By focusing on practical preparation and understanding the support available, you can help them approach this new chapter with confidence.

Our commitment is to provide not just accommodation, but a supportive environment where residents can thrive academically and personally. From essential amenities to wellbeing services, we’ve created a foundation that helps new students navigate the exciting journey ahead.
