Cardiff: Safety bus

Unite sponsors student safety bus in Cardiff city centre
Unite Students sponsors a minibus which helps students at four universities in Cardiff get home safely after nights out.
The student Safety Bus was set up in 2018 by Liberty Living, which Unite acquired in March 2019. The deal saw the procurement of buildings and employees as well as social impact initiatives.
Following the successful acquisition of Liberty, Unite is continuing to sponsor Cardiff’s student Safety Bus.
It operates across the four universities within Cardiff’s city centre and supports any vulnerable person who needs assistance to get home safe and well, running throughout the night across the popular student areas every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday during term time.
While its primary function is student safety, volunteers working on the bus have also assisted numerous other members of the public who have found themselves in vulnerable positions. The scheme has often prevented the need for emergency services to be tied up with alcohol-related incidents.
Our sponsorship of this initiative has also strengthened our relationship with the South Wales Police and has helped to fund their volunteer programme which involves students supporting the police on similar projects.
As a result of the sponsorship, South Wales Police said:
“We have gone from strength to strength and as well as a number of initiatives we now cover the night-time economy safety projects on a Wednesday, Friday and Saturday night.”
