Clearing? Don’t panic: Seven tips to secure your student accommodation

Unite Students, the UK’s leading provider of student accommodation, is sharing practical advice ahead of A-level results day to help students find accommodation quickly and confidently during clearing.

Clearing is no longer just for students who miss out on their first-choice university, with UCAS data showing 77,110 students secured a place through Clearing in 2025. A third (33%) of those proactively declined an existing offer to switch course or university.

Accommodation is an important part of university selection and Unite Students is encouraging applicants to build it into their results day plan, rather than treat it as an afterthought.

1. Get ready before results day
   Clearing moves fast, but accommodation options are still available. Check how booking works now so you can act quickly if you need to.
2. Know what you can afford
   Work out your weekly budget before you search. Look at what’s included in the rent, especially bills, so there are no surprises later.
3. Accept your place quickly
   If you get a clearing offer, watch your email – including junk – and confirm your place through UCAS before booking accommodation.
4. Move fast, but don’t panic-book
   Compare price, location, facilities and contract length before committing. If you can, visit during a clearing open day.
5. Ask where to look
   Universities can point you to available rooms, waiting lists and trusted providers. Be careful with social media listings and read the contract before signing.
6. Check if you can swap later
   If your room does not feel right after you move in, ask about room swaps through your university, provider or student forums.
7. Switching university? Tell your provider early
   If you change course or city, contact your accommodation provider as soon as possible. Some may be able to help you move if rooms are available.
