Accommodation Matters S04E01: Living Black at University
17 February 2022
Accommodation Matters is back for 2022 with a new season! In this first instalment, we share the highlights of our Living Black at University launch event and discussion panel.
In February, Unite Students launched Living Black At University, the first report into the experiences of Black students in student accommodation; you can download the report here. The report was launched at an online event organised with the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI), featuring an overview of the report findings, a panel discussion with Black higher education experts, and an audience Q&A.
Now, we’re proud to share the highlights of the launch event with our Accommodation Matters listeners. With the panellists sharing their own personal experiences of being Black students, this episode is an engaging deep dive into why the report and its recommendations are so important for the sector.
Introduced by Jenny Shaw, Higher Education External Engagement Director at Unite Students, and chaired by HEPI director Nick Hillman, the panel features:
- Sam Kingsley, EDI & Wellbeing Manager at Unite Students
- Hillary Gyebi-Ababio, Vice President for Higher Education at National Union of Students
- Professor Iyiola Solanke, Chair in EU Law & Social Justice and Dean for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Leeds
- Osaro Otobo, Consultant at Halpin Partnership and Project Manager for Living Black at University
The Living Black at University launch event took place on 3rd February 2022 and can be viewed in full here.
